It is naturally present in sparkling water, for example. More information on CO<sub>2<\/sub> can be found in our FAQs.  <\/p>\n<p><b>The Hydrokube <a href=\"https:\/\/hydrokube.be\/adoucisseur_co2\/\">CO<sub>2<\/sub><\/a> softener injects CO<sub>2<\/sub> proportionally into your water system.<\/b> It then dissolves the limescale in the water and transforms it into calcium bicarbonate, which is soluble in water.<br \/>\nThis calcium bicarbonate is used in food (E290) as an acidity regulator and stabilizer, and in medicine to regulate cardiac pressure.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Next, we&#8217;ll explain the Hydrokube treatment principle in more detail. <\/strong>That&#8217;s why it&#8217;s important to explain what scaling is and how it occurs. It&#8217;s not easy to explain, but it makes a lot of sense when you consider that it&#8217;s all a question of balance between the ions present in the water. <\/p>\n<h2>Scaling<\/h2>\n<p>Scaling is the formation of <strong>calcium carbonate <\/strong>(and, to a lesser extent, magnesium carbonate). However, calcium carbonate, or limestone, (chemical formula CaCO<sub>3<\/sub>) can only form if certain conditions are met. Consequently, the reaction, visualized in the formula below, moves to the right (scaling) or stays to the left (dissolving limestone) depending on these conditions.  <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hydrokube.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Formulaire-chimique-equilibre-eau_2-1024x288.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-207264 aligncenter\" title=\"Chemical balance of water\" src=\"https:\/\/hydrokube.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Formulaire-chimique-equilibre-eau_2-1024x288.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"597\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hydrokube.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Formulaire-chimique-equilibre-eau_2-1024x288.png 1024w, https:\/\/hydrokube.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Formulaire-chimique-equilibre-eau_2-300x84.png 300w, https:\/\/hydrokube.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Formulaire-chimique-equilibre-eau_2-768x216.png 768w, https:\/\/hydrokube.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Formulaire-chimique-equilibre-eau_2-610x172.png 610w, https:\/\/hydrokube.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Formulaire-chimique-equilibre-eau_2-1080x304.png 1080w, https:\/\/hydrokube.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Formulaire-chimique-equilibre-eau_2-510x144.png 510w, https:\/\/hydrokube.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Formulaire-chimique-equilibre-eau_2.png 1552w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 597px) 100vw, 597px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>To have scaling <\/strong>(limescale), you need:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>a<strong> sufficiently high concentration of both reagents: Ca<sup>2+<\/sup> and HCO<sub>3<\/sub><sup>2-<\/sup> and<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>low CO<sub>2<\/sub> concentration.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Limescale is not dissolved in water (see chemical formula). Therefore, these waters, called hard waters, will tend to produce deposits leading to the formation of crystals at the solid-liquid interface. These waters thus cause scaling, for example in homes.  <\/p>\n<p><strong>Conversely<\/strong>, if the Ca<sup>2+<\/sup> and HCO<sub>3 <\/sub><sup>2-<\/sup> reactants are in low concentration in the water or if<strong> the water is rich in CO<sub>2<\/sub>, the reaction shifts to the left and will tend to dissolve limescale. <\/strong>The limescale is replaced by calcium bicarbonate.<\/p>\n<h2>CO<sub>2<\/sub> prevents limescale formation<\/h2>\n<p>Hard tap water contains high levels of calcium ions (Ca<sup>2+<\/sup>). If we want to prevent the formation of limescale, CaCO<sub>3 <\/sub>, or dissolve it. As explained in the previous paragraph,   <strong>you need to act by increasing the CO<sub>2<\/sub> concentration. The reaction moves to the left and will tend to dissolve the limestone. The hydrokube is based on this principle of CO<sub>2<\/sub> injection.   The<\/strong><strong>Calcium bicarbonate has the particularity of existing only in a dissolved state in water<\/strong>! The balance is maintained by CO<sub>2 <\/sub>mixed with water. Calcium (and Magnesium) is always present in the water (See water hardness measurement). <\/p>\n<p>In reality, there is<strong> a CO2 concentration that will guarantee the total treatment of limescale<\/strong> and thus the balance of the reaction. The CO2 content has an influence on the pH. We can conclude that for a given mineralization, there is a pH value that corresponds to the target value to ensure the total treatment of limescale.  <\/p>\n<p>If the concentration of CO<sub>2<\/sub> dissolved in water is higher than this equilibrium concentration, <strong>the excess CO<sub>2<\/sub> can dissolve limescale, CaCO<sub>3<\/sub>. <\/strong>But it can also always prevent its formation.<\/p>\n<h2>Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p>T \u201chis is therefore the principle on which the CO<sub>2<\/sub> injection device is based. This principle is entirely consistent with water chemistry and the calco-carbonic reactions that\u201d occur in it. It is therefore logical that \u201csuch a process prevents the formation of scale in sanitary installations for both\u201d cold and hot water.
