Scaling<\/span> refers to the formation of encrusting calcium carbonate <\/b>(and, to a lesser extent, magnesium carbonate). Calcium carbonate or limestone, (chemical formula CaCO3<\/sub><\/span><\/span>) can only be formed if certain conditions are met. As a result, the reaction, visualized in the formula below, moves to the right (scaling) or stays to the left (lime neutralization) depending on these conditions.<\/p>\n

To have scaling<\/b> (limescale), you need :<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. a sufficiently high concentration of the two reagents: Ca2+<\/sup><\/span> and HCO3<\/sub> 2-<\/sup><\/span> and<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n
  2. low CO<\/span>2<\/sub><\/span> concentration<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Lime i<\/span>s not dissolved in water (see chemical formula).<\/span> As a result, these waters, known as hard waters,<\/span>will tend to produce deposits giving rise to the formation of crystals at the solid-liquid interface.
